Fatma Said | Onuart Foundation

A young soprano who is developing a brilliant career in the opera.

Egyptian soprano Fatma Said made her debut at the Cairo Opera House at the age of 14 and is the first Egyptian soprano to receive a scholarship to study at the famous Teatro della Scala Academy in Milan.

Last year Fatma has won the auditions of the Accademia del Teatro alla Scala in Milan and is currently enrolled there.

In the summer of 2013 Fatma received her Bachelor Degree from the Hanns Eisler Music School in Berlin where she studied Opera Singing with Prof. Renate Faltin. She was also a student of Julia Varady and Wolfram Rieger, two professors who have strongly influenced her musical development and interpretation.

2012-2013 she has been an Excellence-Scholarship-Holder of the Hanns Eisler School of Music and last year she has been granted the StartupMusic!Prize2013.

In 2012 she won 1^st prize in the “7^th Leyla Gencer International Opera Competition” in Istanbul, also receiving the Public Prize award. Earlier in 2012 she participated in the “16^th International Robert Schumann Lied Competition” in Zwickau, Germany, winning the 2^nd prize.

In February 2011, Fatma won the Grand Prix in the “Giulio Perotti International Opera Competition” in Germany. In addition, she won the public prize and the prize of the best homeland song interpretation.

In the years 2006 and 2009 Fatma won the 1^st prize in the German Young Musicians’ Competition “Jugend Musiziert” in Germany. From that time onwards, she participated in many concerts and recitals in Egypt, Germany, France, Greece, Turkey, Finland, Austria and in Italy; singing under the Baton of Pietro Mianiti, Achim Zimmermann, Massimiliano Murrali, Lawrence Foster, Sascha Goetzel, Ahmed El Saidi and Christophe Keck.

On the international scene, Fatma appeared as a soloist at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Konzerthaus in Berlin, at the Bad Kissinger Music Festival in Germany, the Schumann Festival in Bonn, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro San Carlo in Naples and at the Turgutreis International Classic Music Festival in Turkey accompanied by the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra joined by world renowned Tenor Jose Cura.

Her roles include “Sesto” in Händel’s Giulio Cesare and also “Feanichton” in Offenbach’s Bataclan. This season she will be debuting as “Clorinda” in Rossini’s Cenerentola at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

She participated in masterclasses with Tom Krause, Renato Bruson, Elio Battaglia, Dalton Baldwin and Diane Forlano.

TedxCairo invited Fatma in May 2011 to sing her first song on the Egyptian revolution “The Day The People Changed”, a song that she participated in composing and sang for her country, Egypt.
